I have been a massive supporter of working from home initiatives since my early days in IT. I made it part of my silent strategy to implement solutions that allowed for flexible working. My go-to was always Windows Remote Desktop Services (aka Terminal Server). I always designed my environments so that it was seamless between desktop, laptop, or RDS. Redirected folders would ensure user documents would flow across all environments. To the business, it was sold as “increased productivity and user up time”. To the end user it sold as a seamless environment where you could access your work from anywhere. But for me it gave the users a hidden benefit that they could now work from home if they wanted to, whether you had a laptop or not.
Cloud has changed the game. Now Im not going to delve into the dangers of the cloud. This is merely to highlight how much of an impact that cloud solutions have enhanced the whole working from home experience, and how O365 was the final piece of the jigsaw puzzle that like Jerry and Dorothy just “completes me”. Cloud based applications helps your organisation to be truly agile. You are able to work from a tablet, a mobile phone, a samsung, an iphone a laptop. It seamlessly brings in all your applications, your work, your documents and allows you work flexibly across any and all of your devices. I have access to all of my tools from the comfort of my own home which allows me to spend more time with my whanau.
My 7yo son spent the day home from school today, and I got to interact with him through out the whole day. We did lunch, stopped in for a haircut and then called in to the library to grab him some books to read. I always keep in my mind that other parents are not so fortunate and am thankful I get to do this as part of my 9-5.
